Yes I know what you are saying and it is something that Google have to look at. I would hold the number one spot for “photo touch up” on a UK search, but no there is an American site holding the top position that shows all prices in dollars. I wonder if the Americans do a local search whether any UK sites come up (doubt it very much).

In this example its especially annoying because its pushing people in the UK towards US based hosts but google gives more credit to a UK hosted site within its UK serps

I had no idea that Google valued a site more because of its location, that is interesting. I am glad that my site is based out of the US, however i don't agree that because a site is located in the states it has a higher value than any other site.

Brad - Thanks for the comment, interesting.

I have seen Googles WMC geo switch take a little while to get working, but that is definitely a big Google issue by the sounds of it.

If you are on a UK IP, have prices in GBP, UK address, en-gb lang values, local directory listings and links that should of even been enough, agreed.

Ridiculous you were forced to switch domains.

We have also noticed the exact reverse issue being true for a client with some generic search phrases. Despite being a UK hosted site, with every possible indicator flagged (Geo preference in WMT, Meta Data, UK local listing etc); Google would only rank it in their US results. High up too; well in the 1st page for 2 word terms.

The only way we were able to overturn this was with our last throw of the dice - changing from .com to .co.uk and approaching all existing links to have them altered.

The site was getting floods of irrelevant US traffic (they only ship to the UK) and we almost lost the contract.

How can something so blindingly obvious be missed except for flaws in the algo?

I think this is not new. Google UK always act strangely when it comes to SERP's ranking. I remember that when I was working on a website whose target market is UK, I tried every possible trick to beat top 3 sites which are US sites but they always dominates the first page. Although after some time I finally managed to do that but still it cost me a lot more time when compare to rank a website in Google Us or Google.com. We even bought a virtual UK IP :P

Number of backlinks + domain age always plays a major role in Google UK ranking.
