I agree with so many of your points and I would like to enphasise the highlighted importance of testing and monitoring to see if it is worthwile bidding on your own brand. I have several clients who use generic terms for their domain name and have not been able to trademark as a result. This obviously opens them up to rivals bidding on their branding. In this situation and based on results from testing bidding on these clients own brand is great and also produces an extremely high conversion rate to sales.. great post.
