this problem seems to be much pronounced within local search queries on Google maps, or is it just me?

Is this the sort of poor user experience that could, potentially, knock Google from its uber-dominant position?

It’s probably unlikely (given the grip it has on the UK search market) but I remember that it was poor results in search engines such as Lycos, Alta Vista, Ask Jeeves et al that opened the door for a young search engine company from California to make its mark…
