As long as the client agrees I don't see a problem. That said I know I lot of small, local clients that come to me with these kinds of complaints.

In the long run and for the benefit of the industry as a whole I tink it's best stoppped.

I absolutely agree that it is not ethical. However with the growth of the internet it's almost impossible to stop these people from getting ahead of the game. But yes i agree it should be stopped!

Cheers!

As long as the client knows it is there and knows the implication of it being there it shouldn't be considered "dark" - its when they don't ask for tell but just include it that I would say it is a little out of order!

As an agency we often provide 2-3 links to our web design or hosting clients if they allow a footer link to us. While we don't offer this to our SEO clients I think it would be reasonable and not grey/black hat as long as the client knows what they are getting in return and agree to it.

That is a very naive comment... sometimes if you want to rank highly for certain keywords (look at the broadband industry) you need to try pretty much anything within the Google guidelines. Links from clients is not unethical in Google's eyes.

I work for an agency that offer to put links on the client site in return for an additional ongoing service. Fair and square, both parties agree, everyone is a winner!

Until Google makes it a black hat technique, i see no reason why this opportunity should be missed??

Good blog BTW, nice to see someone writing about the industry with a twist...

Hiya! I just came across this and I found it quite interesting! I really don't see the big deal in it, IF the clients are aware of what is happening. I would call it a Link Building strategy. It only becomes dodgy when the client is not aware of it.
However I dont approve of links that just say "SEO", because really that doesnt tell anybody anything! If it reads something like "SEO by CompanyName" with a link then thats fine.
I guess for me the most important thing is just making the client aware.
