It can work for niche sites.

Say niche sites without a lot of pagerank to spread out to their entire product range to make them rank.

So long as the sitemap can get these pages in the index, because they are niche they will rank OK.

But on the whole I can see where you are coming from, interesting concept.

Totally agree, I have found some of my sites lose traffic after submitting a sitemap to Google even though more pages were indexed.
